Project
Following years of preparatory work and a successful referendum in the Canton of Lucerne in November 2013, construction work on the CSLS started in August 2014. The project was finished and handed over for operation in late January 2016.
The CSLS building is an industry-type construction which meets the Swiss “Minergie P” standard. It has state-of-the-art building services and a large, inert-atmosphere high-bay container storage system. High sustainability and efficient use of energy are achieved with geothermal heat-exchangers, a photovoltaic installation and waste heat recovery.
Büron, a village with more than 2300 inhabitants in central Switzerland’s Suhre Valley, is just a few minutes north of the Sursee motorway exit. Plot No. 923 is located in the industrial planning zone. Traffic caused by the CSLS is moderate, with around 4 courier deliveries per day.
Motivation
- A cooperative external storage facility is more cost-effective for each participating library than if each acted on its own.
- The merging of holdings allows the participating libraries to free space in their main buildings.
- Innovative technology – guaranteed conservation and fire-proof archiving of holdings with extensively automated storage and retrieval.
- Flexibility – modular extensions can be added to the storage facility according to its developing needs.
