Document scans

In addition to physical loans of holdings library users can also order scans or print copies. Some holdings are not available for loan, but can be accessed via the document delivery service or can be ordered in the reading room. This also applies to items in the collective holding, as only one copy of each item is kept.

The CSLS has two book scanners. We can process items in both A4 and A3 size. Orders are placed using the catalogue. The desired item is ordered from the storage facility in the same way as a loan and then sent to the internal scan service. Depending on the item’s size and condition, CSLS staff decide whether and how it should be scanned. Scans are always of double pages. Following scanning each page is checked for legibility and any scanning errors are corrected.

  • Copyright

As a matter of principle libraries are allowed to make copies for their users. A number of legal aspects must, however, be taken into consideration when making copies and providing extracts from copyright protected works. The Cooperative Storage Library Switzerland has developed guidelines in cooperation with the participating libraries.

    • The protection period in Switzerland is 70 years after the copyright holder’s death.
    • In line with copyright law a work must be an intellectual creation and have an individual character.
    • In the case of monographs or periodicals with monograph character a maximum of ¾ of the entire work may be scanned.
    • Works predating 1900 may be scanned in their entirety.
    • A serial issue is defined as a work, however individual articles are not. It is therefore possible to order copies of complete individual articles from a serial issue.
